Housing Navigation Unit

Adding More Addresses for Those Who Need a Home:
The Critical Role of the Housing Navigation Unit

The answer to homelessness is an address.

Unfortunately, there are not enough permanent housing solutions for all who need them, especially when we account for those who are in temporary shelters. Shelters play an important role in caring for our neighbors, but they are not housing, rather temporary solutions to a larger systemic problem.  Everyone needs and deserves a permanent home.

To meet demand Wake County needs approximately 22,000 affordable housing units today.

We cannot wait for more affordable housing to be built. We must access existing housing options in our community now for individuals and families who need housing immediately.

The Housing Navigation Unit (HNU), coordinates housing between property managers who need to fill spaces and those in dire need of a permanent address. They also provide continued support to participating property managers.

Target Goals of Housing Navigation Unit:

  • Increase the inventory of permanent, affordable homes.
  • Increase available rental units to house those who are in the Homeless Response System.
  • Generate incentives and support for private landlords that are typically unlikely to work with those most vulnerable and most in need.

Target Outcomes of Housing Navigation Unit:

  • Shorten the length of the time homeless.
  • Increase the number of people in permanent housing.
  • Limit the number of people who return to homelessness
